Henderson County Detention Center
The Henderson County Detention Center is a modern facility first opened in 2001. We have a total of 254 beds housed in 6 different housing units. One of the unique designs about this facility is the ability to transfer inmates directly from the detention center to the Henderson County Courthouse without leaving the confines of the structure. We were also the first facility in the Carolinas to use a video visitation system for inmates and their visitors.
Our primary purpose is the safe custody and control of inmates housed at the facility. A list of agencies that we support in housing their inmates include: Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Hendersonville, Laurel Park and Fletcher Police Department’s, N.C. Highway Patrol and others. We are also in the enviable position of currently having more beds than county inmates to house; this allows us to house inmates for other counties who are facing an inmate housing shortage.
Inmate visitation occurs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm with inmates who’s last name starts with an A thru L on Tuesday and M thru Z on Thursday. All visitors must be on the visitor log completed by the inmate and present an acceptable identification before allowed in the video room. Each inmate is allowed 2 visits per night with up to 2 visitors for each visit.
Packages are not accepted at the facility without prior approval of the staff. Mail should be confined to letters without pictures. Any questions on this policy can be directed to the facility administrator.
Friends and family may submit money to an inmate’s canteen fund which will allow that inmate to purchase certain items from the inmate canteen. Items such as snacks, toiletry, extra clothes and other items are offered on a weekly basis. Money can be sent to the inmate in the form of money orders and cashiers checks at the below address. Cash will be accepted only at the detention center, not through the mail.

Immigrations and Custom Enforcement (I.C.E.) 287g Program
On July 1, 2008, the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement 287g program began here in Henderson County. This program screens every prisoner being processed into the Henderson County Detention Center to see if they are legally in the United States or not. Those that are not here legally are interviewed and investigated for possible deportation. In the first three days of operation, agents were able to deport 12 illegal aliens.
We currently have 9 fully trained ICE 287g agents employed by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office. We also have assigned to us a full-time Department of Homeland Security ICE agent to assist with the deportation process.
In the spring of 2008, the Henderson County Detention Center was able to start an inmate work crew program. This program takes carefully screened inmate trustees out into our community to clean up county owned property and roadsides. In the first week of operation, the inmates picked up a total of 97 bags of garbage from roads leading to the Henderson County Landfill as well as County owned Parks. In addition to working outside, the inmates have cleaned and painted a bathhouse at a County Park and painted 2 housing pods at the Detention Center. They also painted classrooms in the Henderson County Public Schools while students were on summer vacation. As Detention manpower allows, this valuable program will continue to grow and provide a service to the citizens of Henderson County.
